Is Religion in the way of Reform?

While surfing around the web for the latest and greatest in the seemingly endless Health Care debate, I came across an interesting video from one of my favorite shows, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. During one of their quick snippet video jokes they highlighted part of a speech from a member of the House of Representatives. His name is (R) Todd Akin and he represents Missouri’s 2nd District. In the video he stated how he believes that we’re standing on the abyss and that people who have issues with the current Health Care bill should turn to God in prayer to ask for his help “supernaturally”. All in an attempt to make sure we don’t take “this fatal step into socialized medicine.”

It might just be me, but doesn’t it seem that since the last election the country has been over-investing in fear mongering and rampant doomsday predictions instead of job creation or refurbishing our infrastructure? I think everyone can agree that the United States is in dire need of some sort of reform, is prayer the integral piece that’s been missing from the legislative process? Or is it perhaps the thing that’s been holding us back from a meaningful discussion about how to fix the leaks in our boat? What do you guys think?

Here’s the video, unfortunately I couldn’t find a shorter version but it’s about 3/4 into the video.

  1. I do think that there are a few religious nuts out there who equate health care reform to the apocalypse, but I don’t think religion is the most prominent issue here.

I think the main thing is that most Americans have a very short attention-span when it comes to politics. When this year-long health care debate started, the majority of people wanted something passed within a few months so everyone could get on with there lives. But now, nearly a year later, the thing STILL hasn’t been finished, everyone’s had to hear nonstop, overblown bullsh** from the talking heads on TV, and all we hear from our representatives are meaningless talking points to help them get re-elected. Still, all this while, the average American hasn’t learned a single thing about why insurance monopolies suck.

The only real correlation I see with religion is that the same traits exhibited by your naive religious person (the kind who doesn’t think critically about why they believe what they believe) is being exhibited by your average American, and our representatives are treating us accordingly.

I completely agree. I truly think that one of the biggest reasons our government seems so ineffective these days is because of the blind faith on strange issues that most Americans have.
