‘The New Tithe’

Project Reason, a non-profit that advocates science and secularism, sponsors an annual video contest. The video below, ‘The New Tithe’, seems to be this year’s favorite (though the winners have yet to be disclosed).

About Jon Adams

I have my bachelors in sociology and political science, having recently graduated from Utah State University. I co-founded SHAFT, but have also been active in the College Democrats and the Religious Studies Club. I was born in Utah to a loving LDS family. I left Mormonism in high school after discovering some disconcerting facts about its history. Like many ex-Mormons, I am now an agnostic atheist. I am amenable to being wrong, however. So should you disagree with me about religion (or anything, really), please challenge me. I welcome and enjoy a respectful debate. I love life, and am thankful for those things and people that make life worth loving: my family, my friends, my dogs, German rock, etc. Contact: jon.earl.adams@gmail.com

  1. I’ve always struggled with paying my tithing. Even more so in the last few years after the Prop 8 fiasco and the amount of LDS church money directed to that cause. I am sure every organization has their flaws in how they handle their money but after some research someone could perhaps choose a lesser evil to something that matters.

I also have a question about LDS tithing: If I mark ‘Humanitarian’ on the tithing slip, are they obliged to use that money entirely in that fashion or does it just go into a general tithing fund sent from the Bishop to whoever collects it?
