An adult discussion about pornography

The topic of pornography permeates a lot of my conversations with friends, but I have largely avoided the topic here because its relevance to atheism and secular humanism is pretty tenuous. I could contrive some connection, but I won’t bother, so please pardon the digression. I just feel compelled to write about pornography because it’s an important issue that merits sober discussion, but rarely gets one. Well that, and you’re supposed to write about what you know. Ha ha.

Many of us were raised in a conservative religious environment wherein pornography was demonized. My parents were more permissive than most Mormon parents, but I was still taught by church leaders and peers that pornography was a grievous sin and serious evil.

When I left the LDS Church, I was forced to re-evaluate my moral philosophy. Mormonism was mistaken about god—why not morality as well? In my estimation, the church got some things right (family, charity, love) and others wrong (R-rated movies, coffee, homosexuality). My take on pornography, however, is decidedly more nuanced.

It’s important to acknowledge at the outset that pornography is not a monolith, and is instead very diverse. I’ll be speaking about it in generalities, so don’t read my comments as a defense/critique of all porn. And just as porn is diverse, so too are its viewers, one third of whom are women.*

Every member a missionary

This post was written by my friend and recent USU alumnus Di. It was originally published at her blog and is shared here with her permission.

At the risk of coming across as a raving anti-Mormon to people who don’t know me well, I offer the following story to those dealing with non and former Mormons.

Matt and I had a couple of people who I assume were from Relief Society (Mormon women’s organization) drop by the other day to welcome us to the neighborhood. It was very nice of them to introduce themselves and ask about us. But as soon as those brief niceties were over, they then asked if we were members and we said no. Which was followed by asking if we had been baptized, to which we said yes. They proceeded to tell us where the church was and what time services are. Then they pointed out all our member neighbors, while seemingly not knowing or not caring about any of the non churchgoing neighbors.

I get that there is a lot of emphasis put on missionary work and fellowshipping (being friendly to with a missionary slant) non and inactive members. But this whole visit was really frustrating to me, because I felt like it went from a really nice “welcome to the area” visit to a “missionary/we don’t care about you if you don’t come to church” visit in 30 seconds.

Mormonism: a definition through contradiction

The following is a paper I wrote for a class in 2008. It was among my first forays into Mormon studies, and my understanding of Mormonism has evolved slightly since then. Still, I hope the paper yields a few insights—at least enough to excuse its length!

Mormonism is a religion colored by complexities and contradictions. The prolific Mormon essayist Eugene England called the Mormon experience “essentially, as well as existentially, paradoxical.” LDS author Terryl Givens, more recently, posits a similar thesis in his book People of Paradox.

“By proving contraries, truth is made manifest,” said Joseph Smith, the founding prophet of the LDS Church. Informed by Smith’s statement, I will discuss Mormonism’s contraries in the hope of explaining the religion. My method in this paper will follow the seven Cs of religious studies: creed, code, cultus, community, culture, confines, and consciousness. In each of these seven characteristics exist tensions that help define Mormonism.

One of the most important aspects of a religion is its creed—its set of core beliefs. The Mormon “creed,” as it were, can be found in the Articles of Faith. Joseph Smith penned a letter to the inquiring John Wentworth, editor of the Chicago Democrat, articulating 13 fundamental doctrines of Mormonism. The letter was later canonized as the Articles of Faith.

The primary articles affirm the church’s belief in: God, Christ, and the Holy Ghost; free moral agency and accountability for one’s actions; the salvation of man through the Atonement and “by obedience to the laws and ordinances [faith, repentance, baptism by immersion, and the laying on of hands] of the Gospel”; the Bible “as far as it is translated correctly” and the Book of Mormon as scripture; continuing revelation; and the Restoration of the Primitive Church.

Blogs are rarely a conducive medium for thoughtful discussions. (I do, however, think this blog’s discussions fare better than most.) The following diagram should serve as a general guide for how rational human beings exchange ideas:

Online discussions, especially those that concern sensitive issues like religion, are difficult to have. But if we’re civil and amenable to argument, such discussions aren’t futile.

Wikileaks is back in the news with revelations about the detention of Bradley Manning, the 23-year-old soldier accused of divulging classified information to the group. I’ve been critical of Wikileaks, but I nonetheless disapprove of Manning’s treatment.

In a Virginia military brig, he has been kept in intensive solitary confinement for many months, and has lately been forced to sleep naked. State Department P.J. Crowley called the treatment “ridiculous and counterproductive and stupid.” (Crowley has since resigned because of that remark.) And if convicted, Manning may face the death penalty. Such a punishment, argues the Harvard Law and Policy Review, would be “incredibly inappropriate.”

A question to my Christian/Mormon friends: If god was willing to flood the entire earth, as he did in Genesis, and sink dozens of large cities, as in Third Nephi, why is it now implausible or objectionable to suggest that god caused an earthquake in Japan?

Ohio State’s Introduction to Philosophy of Religion will be co-taught Spring Quarter—by an atheist and a Christian. Their lectures will be supplemented by a weekly debate. Awesome. I think they should swap sides occasionally, like USU professors Kleiner and Huenemann did in the atheist-theist debate SHAFT hosted in 2008.

Warren Jeffs, the imprisoned leader of an FLDS cult, issued a letter (“A Warning to the Nation”) to the U.S. government, demanding that he be released on threat of terrible divine judgment for America. The letter is signed by thousands of Jeffs’ devotees and weighs three pounds.

Next month is the semi-annual LDS General Conference, and I was reminded by this fact that I haven’t done a conference-related post for some time. Well, I found another great moment in conference history.

I want to a briefly discuss a talk given in the April 1975 General Conference by Elder Vaughn J. Featherstone. In it, he condemned so-called “self-inflicted” sins like masturbation, homosexuality, drinking soda and studying controversial teachings like “Adam-God.” His talk was a pretty typical laundry list of LDS concerns circa 1975, but one comment got my attention:

Why it’s probable we live in a simulated reality

I dislike intro-level philosophy classes. Invariably, a student asks whether this world is merely a ‘matrix’. The question usually elicits an eye-roll from me—not because it’s a bad one, but because it’s so tired and clichéd. (And the question is made all the more obnoxious by the fact that the student thinks he or she is volunteering something novel.) So I’ve kind of dismissed the thought about living in a matrix as an amateurish musing popularized by a silly movie. But recently, I’ve encountered a more sophisticated articulation of this issue.

In a debate last month, atheist author Sam Harris made an interesting secular argument for the afterlife. It’s known as the simulation argument, and it was first formulated by Swedish philosopher Nick Bostrom. Bostrom contends that it’s likely we live in a simulated world, and this conclusion rests on pretty sound assumptions. I’ll let him explain the logic in his own words:
